Better Than Wolves is built around a tech tree powered by real machinery rather than instant crafting. This wiki-style primer walks through the core ideas: making power, moving it, using it in machines and the long climb toward steel. It is a starting point, not a full recipe reference.
The idea behind BTW
Better Than Wolves aims for a richer survival and engineering experience while keeping the feel of vanilla Minecraft. Instead of single "magic blocks" that do everything, it gives you basic tools and expects you to combine them. Progress is slow on purpose, and each stage depends on the one before it.
Generating mechanical power
Windmills
Windmills are large sail structures that turn an axle when built in a suitable open space. They are a classic early source of continuous mechanical power.
Water wheels
Water wheels sit in flowing water and turn as it passes. They are a good option where you have a river or can build a channel, and they make a natural base location.
Both convert the world around you into rotational power, which is the backbone of everything else in the tech tree.
Moving power with axles and gearboxes
Axles carry rotational power from a source to where you need it. Gearboxes let you redirect that power and split it toward different machines. Planning these lines early saves a lot of rebuilding later.
Treat your power layout like a small factory floor: one source, a clear main axle line and gearboxes where the line branches.
Machines that use power
- Mill stones grind materials using mechanical power.
- Saws cut materials and are an important step in the progression.
- Cauldrons are used for cooking and processing.
- Kilns fire materials as part of the crafting chain.
- Anvils appear in BTW's own crafting progression.
In the Forge port, installing JEI 15.3.0.8 or newer adds browsable recipe categories for the cauldron, crucible and mill stone.
The road to steel
The later tech tree leads through crucibles and the soulforge into a steel progression. Steel tools and weapons, such as the battleaxe and warhammer, sit near the top. Getting there takes real infrastructure, which is a large part of BTW's appeal.
Survival systems to plan around
- Hunger and penalties: the Forge port uses a reworked food system with four debuff tracks.
- Costly sleep: sleeping is no longer a free way to skip the night.
- Farming and husbandry: hemp cultivation, animal husbandry, cooking, baking, knitting and dyeing all feed into progress.
- Combat: the composite bow and later steel weapons help with a harsher world.
Where to find the full wiki
For in-depth mechanics and recipes, the Community Edition project points players to its wiki at wiki.btwce.com. It is written for CE on 1.6.4, so some details may differ in the Forge 1.20.1 port, which is still in beta. Use it as a guide to concepts, and check JEI in the port for exact recipes.
