Plenty of modpacks still run on Minecraft 1.12.2, so it is natural to search for Better Than Wolves mod 1.12. The short answer is that there is no original Better Than Wolves release for 1.12. Here is what does exist, and what 1.12.2 players usually do instead.
Which versions Better Than Wolves actually supports
| Edition | Minecraft version |
|---|---|
| Original Better Than Wolves (FlowerChild) | 1.0 – 1.5.2 |
| Better Than Wolves: Community Edition | 1.6.4 |
| Better Than Wolves [MODERN PORT] | 1.20.1 |
None of these lists 1.12 or 1.12.2. The original stopped at 1.5.2, the Community Edition continued on 1.6.4, and the Modern Port jumped to 1.20.1.
Why there is no 1.12 version
The original mod's history ended on 1.5.2, and the community continuation chose to stay on 1.6.4 rather than chase newer versions. The Forge port targets 1.20.1 specifically. Mods are compiled against a particular Minecraft version and loader, so a 1.20.1 or 1.6.4 file cannot simply be loaded on 1.12.2.
Be wary of downloads labelled "Better Than Wolves 1.12". They are either renamed files from other projects or something else entirely. Check the author and source before installing.
What 1.12.2 players use instead
Players who want BTW-style mechanics on 1.12.2 usually turn to separate Forge projects inspired by it. The best known is Better With Mods, a Forge mod for 1.12.2 (and 1.11.2) that brings BTW-like ideas such as mechanical power to those versions.
It is important to understand that Better With Mods is a different mod with its own developers, content and balance. It is not the original Better Than Wolves and not an official port.
Should you stay on 1.12.2?
If you have a 1.12.2 modpack you love, a BTW-inspired mod on that version may be the easiest path. If what you want is Better Than Wolves itself on a modern version, the Forge 1.20.1 port is the closer match, as it runs the original code through a compatibility layer. And if you want the established community version with addons, the Community Edition on 1.6.4 is the one to look at.
Quick summary
- There is no original Better Than Wolves release for 1.12.
- For 1.12.2, look at separate BTW-inspired mods such as Better With Mods.
- For BTW on a modern version, use the Forge 1.20.1 port linked in our Download section.
