Better Than Wolves Mod on CurseForge: Reading the Files and Updates

Illustration of a file list with version tags and a checklist for game version, mod loader and release type

If you look up Better Than Wolves mod CurseForge, you will find more than one result. This guide shows which project the download on this site comes from, how its file list is laid out, and what the version names and tags actually tell you.

The project behind our download

The download on this site comes from Better Than Wolves [MODERN PORT] on CurseForge, created by ThatSoulyGuy. The listing describes it as a port of FlowerChild's Better Than Wolves, originally made for Minecraft 1.5.2, to Forge 1.20.1. It runs the original code through a compatibility bridge instead of rewriting it.

At the time of writing, the project page showed a Creative Commons 4.0 license and a client and server environment.

How the file list looks

On October 18, 2026 the project listed nine files, all for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. A selection:

FileUploaded
BetterThanWolves-1.20.1-1.5.1-alpha.5.jarOct 15, 2026
BetterThanWolves-1.20.1-1.4.1-alpha.6.jarOct 11, 2026
BetterThanWolves-1.20.1-1.4.0-alpha.5.jarOct 11, 2026
BetterThanWolves-1.20.1-1.3.0-alpha.3.jarJul 9, 2026
BetterThanWolves-1.20.1-0.3.0-alpha.3.jarMay 16, 2026
BetterThanWolves-1.20.1-0.1.0-alpha.1.jarApr 5, 2026

The newest file, 1.5.1-alpha.5, was labelled as the latest release and is the one our main download button links to.

Reading the file names

Each file name follows the same pattern, which makes it easy to compare builds:

  • BetterThanWolves is the mod name.
  • 1.20.1 is the Minecraft version the build targets.
  • The next number, such as 1.5.1, is the mod's own version. Higher means newer.
  • alpha.5 is a pre-release tag. Every build so far has carried an alpha label, which matches the project's description of itself as an ongoing beta.

Game version and loader tags

CurseForge shows tags beside each file. For this project they read 1.20.1 and Forge. Those tags are the quickest way to confirm a file belongs in a Forge 1.20.1 instance. If you ever see a file tagged for a different version or loader, it is not the one described on this site.

Keeping up with updates

Builds have arrived in bursts, with several uploads on some days and gaps of weeks at other times. To check for something newer than the file we link, open the files page and compare the mod version in the name. When updating:

  1. Back up your world.
  2. Remove the old Better Than Wolves .jar from mods.
  3. Add the new file and launch.

Because the port is in alpha, a new build may change behaviour. Testing it on a copy of your world first is the safe approach.

Other Better Than Wolves results on CurseForge

Searches for Better Than Wolves on CurseForge also surface modpacks and other mods with similar names. Some are inspired by BTW, others are unrelated. They are separate projects with their own authors and requirements. Check the author, the Minecraft version and the loader tag before downloading anything.
